Sony Xperia Z2 UI leaks

Just a few days ago we saw high-res live pictures of the Xperia D6503 Sirius. It packs a 5.2" 1080p display, runs on Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974-AB chipset with a quad-core 2.3GHz Krait 400 CPU, faster Adreno 330 GPU and 3GB of RAM). At the back there's a 20.7MP camera with a larger than usual sensor, while Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with a newer version of Sony's home-baked launcher is under the hood.

The retail device will be running on Android 4.4 KitKat, but the one we are seeing today seems to be running on an older firmware build with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Still, the screenshots are enough to show us some of the changes coming with Sony's new launcher.

Sony D6503 Leaks Online

Live photos of the upcoming Sony D6503 handset leaks online, courtesy iRimas from XDA, who tags this phone as the D6503 and plans to share some leaks of the UI shortly too. The phone itself looks very similar to the Xperia Z1, although the side bezels are noticeably thinner. The smaller bezel could indicate that the handset sports a slightly larger 5.2-inch display into the same frame size.

The bottom of the phone has three larger speaker holes as opposed to the fine mesh speaker grill found in the Xperia Z1.The micro USB port sits on the left side with what looks like the SIM tray. The right side has room for a micro SD slot. The only other change is the lanyard, which is placed on the left side, rather than the right side on the Xperia Z1.

The placement of all features looks the same as the Xperia Z1, including the power button, volume rocker, dedicated camera key, magnetic pins, headphone jack and even the LED notification light. The camera placement on the back of the phone is also the same, although the specs beside the camera do not reveal whether this will be the same 20.7MP sensor as found in the Xperia Z1.

Sony Mobile to launch Windows Phones

Sony Mobile Communications has decided to launch ODM models of Windows Phone 8-based smartphones, while concentrating its R&D efforts on Android and Firefox models, according to industry sources.

Through the cooperation deal, Sony Mobile aims to sell its WP8 phone to telecom operators in the US, while Microsoft aims to tap the Japan market in order to expand the global share of WP8 phones, said the sources.

Sony Mobile and Taiwan-based ODM Compal Communications have nailed down orders for 1-2 models, with an additional 2-3 models still under discussion, noted the sources, adding that order volumes for the initial 1-2 models will reach only tens of thousands of units each.

Global sales of WP8 phones are expected to top 50 million units in 2014, accounting for 4% of total global smartphone sales in the year, the sources estimated.

Nokia will account for 90% of WP8 phone shipments in 2014, and other vendors including Sony Mobile, HTC, Samsung Electronics and Huawei will share the remaining 10%, added the sources.
