Sony Xperia Z2 UI leaks

Just a few days ago we saw high-res live pictures of the Xperia D6503 Sirius. It packs a 5.2" 1080p display, runs on Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974-AB chipset with a quad-core 2.3GHz Krait 400 CPU, faster Adreno 330 GPU and 3GB of RAM). At the back there's a 20.7MP camera with a larger than usual sensor, while Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with a newer version of Sony's home-baked launcher is under the hood.

The retail device will be running on Android 4.4 KitKat, but the one we are seeing today seems to be running on an older firmware build with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Still, the screenshots are enough to show us some of the changes coming with Sony's new launcher.

Sony D6503 Leaks Online

Live photos of the upcoming Sony D6503 handset leaks online, courtesy iRimas from XDA, who tags this phone as the D6503 and plans to share some leaks of the UI shortly too. The phone itself looks very similar to the Xperia Z1, although the side bezels are noticeably thinner. The smaller bezel could indicate that the handset sports a slightly larger 5.2-inch display into the same frame size.

The bottom of the phone has three larger speaker holes as opposed to the fine mesh speaker grill found in the Xperia Z1.The micro USB port sits on the left side with what looks like the SIM tray. The right side has room for a micro SD slot. The only other change is the lanyard, which is placed on the left side, rather than the right side on the Xperia Z1.

The placement of all features looks the same as the Xperia Z1, including the power button, volume rocker, dedicated camera key, magnetic pins, headphone jack and even the LED notification light. The camera placement on the back of the phone is also the same, although the specs beside the camera do not reveal whether this will be the same 20.7MP sensor as found in the Xperia Z1.

Sony Xperia Z2 Specs Leaked;

According to Chinese sources at Digi-wo, it looks like someone who claims to be part of Sony’s R&D department has leaked some screenshots of the Xperia Z2’s back cover, along with a small spec sheet of what we can look forward to once this device launches. Just looking at the back cover, it looks to follow the same style as some of the other Xperia devices, (albeit without the glass back we’ve become accustomed to on that least few devices) which makes the leak a little more believable but there is still no confirmation so we just have to speculate for now. Despite that fact it’s still exciting to think we could be getting an early look at a part of the next Sony smartphone before it’s actual launch, or maybe it’s only exciting if you’re a tech geek.

According to the R&D source, the Sony Xperia Z2 looks to be coming with a 5.3 inch display, although there was no mention on what type exactly and no word on resolution. Besides the display, the Z2 is also rumored to have a 23MP rear facing camera, and just in case you don’t like the color of the Z2 cover in the image, that’s ok, because Sony is allegedly going to offer the Z2 in five different colors. If that’s true, you’ll have more of a chance to have a unique looking device. As far as specs go, that’s all the source gave up, but we were left with a rather interesting piece of information, and that’s the potential unveiling of the phone.

We’ll see this unveiled sometime in February.

Sony Mobile to launch Windows Phones

Sony Mobile Communications has decided to launch ODM models of Windows Phone 8-based smartphones, while concentrating its R&D efforts on Android and Firefox models, according to industry sources.

Through the cooperation deal, Sony Mobile aims to sell its WP8 phone to telecom operators in the US, while Microsoft aims to tap the Japan market in order to expand the global share of WP8 phones, said the sources.

Sony Mobile and Taiwan-based ODM Compal Communications have nailed down orders for 1-2 models, with an additional 2-3 models still under discussion, noted the sources, adding that order volumes for the initial 1-2 models will reach only tens of thousands of units each.

Global sales of WP8 phones are expected to top 50 million units in 2014, accounting for 4% of total global smartphone sales in the year, the sources estimated.

Nokia will account for 90% of WP8 phone shipments in 2014, and other vendors including Sony Mobile, HTC, Samsung Electronics and Huawei will share the remaining 10%, added the sources.

Images of the Xperia ZU Leaked!

The images show off how sensitive this new Xperia’s touchscreen really is. The heart was on the touchscreen as well. While this isn’t terribly exciting news or anything, it does give credence to the rumor that this device is going to be shipping with pen-input, something we’ve been hearing for a long time now.

Let’s take a look at those specs;
- 6.44-inch IPS LCD display (1920 x 1080) with 342ppi
- 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor
- 2GB of installed RAM
- 16GB internal storage capacity with MicroSD expansion slot (up to 64GB)
- 8MP rear facing camera (Sony Exmor RS sensor), with 1.3MP front facing
- 3,000mAh non-removable battery

The size of the device alone suggests that Sony is going after Samsung’s Note line but, the question is can they go after Samsung on the software front? Love it or hate it, TouchWiz has a lot of added value when it comes to the S-Pen, with apps that get the most out of the pen-input and offer users some real productivity tools. Sony has often kept their skin close to that of stock Android, so it will be interesting to see just what Sony can bring to the table with the Xperia ZU.

PlayStation 4 Retail Price Revealed

Japanese website the Asahi Shimbun reports that Sony's new gaming console will cost 40,000 Yen - which translates to about £270. UK gamers will have to factor in VAT, which adds a whopping 20 per cent to the price, taking the possible UK figure to around £325.

This is the first real inkling we have as to how much the PlayStation 4 might cost. At $428, consumer are more likely to make the purchase, and with Microsoft also purportedly bringing the Xbox 720 at some point this year, it’s vitally important for Sony to give current PlayStation users a reason to remain loyal when they decide to upgrade their hardware.

The cheapest PlayStation 3 variant now coats 24,980 Yen in Japan and $269 in the US, and although age are both contributing factors to its current low price, it’s fair to say a ~$400 cost at launch for a PlayStation 4 would be gratefully received.

The new console is also expected to have a touchpad controller, as well as an eight-core x64 AMD processor (codenamed 'Bulldozer'), 8GB of RAM, 2.2GB of video RAM, four USB ports that use the new high-speed USB 3.0 standard, a Blu-ray drive, a hard drive of 160GB, an Ethernet port, and both HDMI and optical outputs. However specs for the next-generation Xbox are rumoured to be comparable, with insiders suggesting that it will also pack 8GB of RAM, HDMI connectors and USB 3.0.

The launches are important for both Sony and Microsoft, as gamers have moved away from consoles since the Xbox 360 and the PS3 debuted. More and more people have shifted to the tablet and the smartphone as a gaming platform. Analysts expect that tablets and other mobile devices will match the power and graphics of today's games consoles within a few years.

Sony releases development kit for PlayStation Mobile platform [Report]

Sony has released the first public version of software to create games for PlayStation Mobile, its gaming platform for third-party phones and tablets.

The company's gaming division said Tuesday that it is now offering a public version of its SDK (software development kit) for about US$100 in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, the U.K. and the U.S.

PlayStation Mobile is Sony's gaming platform for Android-based devices made by outside manufacturers. It is attempting to woo both hardware makers and game developers to the program, a departure from its traditional console business where it charges developers for the right to make and sell PlayStation software.

Sony will still attempt to tightly control the gaming environment in PlayStation Mobile: all software will be approved by the company, and will only run on devices it has certified. The company has also stressed that games on the platform will be largely distinct from the mainstream titles for PlayStation consoles, saying it will offer "PlayStation-like experiences" to users.

The company has made a strong effort to lure developers to the fledgling platform, setting the development cost equal to what Apple charges for building apps for iOS and offering online support for technical issues.
Sony last year launched a closed beta version of the SDK, which includes development tools and software, and has previously said the official launch would occur in November.
The company will use a pricing scheme by which developers sell their titles "wholesale" to the company, and then Sony sells the titles "retail" to end users. As a pricing example, the company said that a game priced wholesale at 70 cents will sell for about a dollar.

On the device side, PlayStation Mobile runs on Sony's Xperia phones, tablets and its Vita handheld. It is also available on a small number of phones made by Sharp as well as HTC's "One" line of smartphones.
Sony has also signed up Asus to make devices for its platform, which was previously called PlayStation Suite.
