Samsung Galaxy S5 to use Sharp 2K display

According to a report by Chinese website Tencent, Samsung has decided not to use a Super AMOLED HD display panel for its Galaxy S5 flagship smartphone. Traditionally, ever since the first Galaxy S smartphone, Samsung has always preferred its own AMOLED displays for its flagships.

The Galaxy S5 will be an exception, as Samsung has chosen Sharp to provide a 5.25" 2K Ultra HD LTPS display panel. It's going to pack an exceptional pixel density of 560 pixels per inch.

The reason behind Samsung's decision resides in one of its subsidiaries, which has run into production issues with the 2K Ultra HD AMOLED displays. As a result of them, the company can't keep up the production and won't be able to make enough of them to meet the expected Galaxy S5 demand.

Choosing Sharp will also allow Samsung to free up its display factories for the upcoming flexible line-up of AMOLED displays, which it hopes will reach large market availability by 2015. Additionally, if Sharp really turns out to be the manufacturer of Galaxy S5's displays, this will be beneficial to Samsung, which owns 3% stake in the company back in March.

The report confirms earlier evidence of the Galaxy S5's 2K UHD display, which popped up in a leaked benchmark of the device. Other rumors suggest the Galaxy S5 will be launched (or at least shown) as early as Q1 of next year, have a 16 MP snapper with the ISOCELL tech, perhaps without optical image stabilization and possibly with some elements resistance in tow.

Samsung Galaxy S5 coming at MWC 2014

According to Korea’s inews24, Dong-hoon Chang today confirmed that Samsung would unveil its new Galaxy S5 high-end smartphone at MWC this February. Unfortunately, that’s all that the Samsung exec allegedly said.

The Korean publication notes that Galaxy S5 is a “tentative name”, so we may have a surprise when it comes to the handset’s final moniker (although, frankly, S5 seems to be the best choice for the smartphone's official name).

Rumors regarding the features of the new Galaxy appeared countless times until now, suggesting that we should expect to see it having a 64-bit Exynos processor and a 5.25-inch Quad HD (1440 x 2560) AMOLED display. We also saw a few concepts that envision the Galaxy S5 through the eyes of fans, but there’s no way of telling if any of them resemble the real device.

MWC 2014 debuts on February 24 in lovely Barcelona, so we’re not that far away from finding out if the Galaxy S5 will be announced there. Of course, 'till then, CES 2014 kicks off next week, albeit Samsung will probably not reveal any new smartphones at this show, (but it might showcase the Galaxy Gear 2).

Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo with 5” display

A word got out that Samsung will release another version of the popular and affordable Galaxy Grand. Dubbed Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo, the handset is said to sit below the Galaxy Grand 2 in the company’s smartphone range.

The Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo is tipped to have a 1.2GHz quad-core A7 CPU and 5” WVGA display. The smartphone is said to boot TouchWiz-ed Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. There is no further info on the handset’s specifications for the time being.

Given Samsung's proclivity for releasing multiple iterations of the same device, it's easy to believe that these rumors will turn out true. Expect the design of the Grand Neo to be in line with that of the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2.

Galaxy S5 to be released on January 2014.

the Galaxy S5 – could be set to arrive as soon as January. If true, it would be a real break away from the spring-summer launches we’ve witnessed these past couple of years, and would leave Galaxy S4 users feeling more short-changed than they perhaps already do.

The report arrives courtesy of Korean publication Naver, and suggests that the rushed release is a result of the Galaxy S 4 not shifting as many units as Samsung had anticipated. The device will, according to the report, be showcased in January of next year, with the release to consumers taking place in February.

In terms of specs, the report talks of a 64-bit octa-core Exynos processor, as well as a 16-megapixel OIS camera. Sounds like overkill, of course, but then again, such is the case with the vast majority of smartphones on the market today. With Samsung already expressing its lack of interest in building a fingerprint sensor for its device range, could it be that the Korean outfit is planning to take at least one leaf from the Apple stork by going all 64-bit on us?

Almost every facet of the report seems made up, but if, by some reach, Samsung is planning to unveil a new-year gift to the smartphone industry in January of next year, it stands to reason that we’ll start hearing about it pretty soon.

Samsung working on its own version of Google Glass

Although many in the know have stepped out and suggested that Google Glass will not make a widespread impression on the consumer market, it’s fair to say that the consensus pertaining the wearable tech is one of excitement. Ever since the project was first revealed last year, we’ve seen some exciting snippets of what Glass could eventually be capable of, and with many developers and creative individuals currently working on apps, Glass’ launch early next year will be, one suspects, a significant date in the calendar.

The “Gear Glass” news is courtesy of industry insider Eldar Murtazin, who recently took to Twitter to reveal that the product may launch – or at least become a public project – sometime in April or May of next year. We don’t know how much it will cost or what it will look like, but it’s probably safe to assume it will work with Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones and Android, similar to how the Galaxy Gear functions.

We imagine there’s going to be some sort of suit from Google if Samsung really uses “Glass” in the product’s name, there’s no doubt that could create some confusion among consumers, but Samsung doesn’t seem very afraid of lawsuits with major competitors. We’ll see in the coming months.

Half price of Samsung Galaxy S4 might come by end of year.

A Snapdragon 800 phone with the unprecedented 4GB of RAM and coming at half the price of the Samsung Galaxy S4 has leaked out in China and it might be manufactured by Shenzhou company Hasee.

The mysterious device looks like it’s taken straight out of a nerd’s fairy tale book. The unprecedented 4 gigs of RAM is the maximum Android can go to right now. The 32-bit platform simply cannot support more than that, and China might be stretching the limits. Is this even possible, though? Two months ago SK Hynix announced its 8Gb LPDDR3 chip and it’s possible to stack four of these together to get the whopping 4GB of RAM.

The real question is how can the mysterious Hasee phone be that affordable? The rumored price is around 1799 yuan or $295 off contract. In comparison, the Galaxy S4 costs around $600 off contract and the Apple iPhone 5 sells for around $650.

The rest of the specs include 16GB and 32GB internal storage versions, a 13-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front shooter and Adreno 330 graphics. All of that runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

The only slightly disturbing thing is the weight of the supposed upcoming Hasee phone coming at the weighty 195 grams (6.9 ounces). In exchange, you get a 2500mAh battery.

Take a look at the spec sheet below;

The device still features a 7-inch display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, as well as a dual-core CPU at 1.2 GHz, powered by 1 GB of RAM memory with either 8GB or 16GB or internal storage, microSD card slot, a 3 megapixel rear camera and a 1.3 megapixel front camera. It has a 4,000 mAh Li-ion battery, and runs on Android 4.1.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini Specs Leaks Online

Samsung is expected to lift the lid on the Galaxy S4 Mini at June 20, but as for the specifics inside, most of it has been a lot of guess work until now.

Sources claim the Galaxy S4 Mini will be powered by a 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor. The device will also have 1.5GB of RAM with a 8-megapixel rear camera, 2.1-megapixel snapper on the front, and a 540 x 960p qHD resolution display with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

A Prototype of Microsoft Smartwatch

A source familiar with the development of Microsoft’s Xbox has spoken with The Verge this week, noting that development of a smartwatch is indeed in the works right now. Sources note that a wrist-worn device has been in development by Microsoft for just over a year, and that this machine wont just be a companion for the gaming console.

Stacking up the tips and suggestions made throughout this month thus far, you’ll find this smartwatch to be working with a 1.5-inch touchscreen display, the possibility of gesture/motion control, and a re-use of the same connectors used for the Microsoft Surface tablets. With these connectors you’ll be able to pick your watch face up, place it down in a special tray, and let it charge all night long.

This connectivity might not make it past the prototype stage and, based on what we understand thus far, the entire watch might stay a prototype into the future as well. Have a peek at the timeline below to see additional clues, bits, and pieces leading to the final product sooner than later.

Microsoft reported working on the touched-enabled watch device

Microsoft is reportedly exploring the idea of joining what promises to be a crowded smartwatch market.

The tech titan has asked suppliers in Asia to ship components for a potential touch-enabled watch device, executives at the suppliers told The Wall Street Journal. One executive told the Journal that he had met with Microsoft's research and development team in Redmond, Wash., but it's unclear whether Microsoft will commit to producing such a device.

Microsoft has requested these components to potentially create a touch-enabled watch device, featuring a 1.5 inch display. Microsoft requested displays from component makers for that specific size. No word on exactly if Microsoft will follow through with a touch-enabled watch, but this report gives us a positive outlook on its chances.

Back in 2008, we saw the sales of Microsoft's Smart Watch disappear. Smart Watch was Microsoft's first interest in a wearable gadget, which provided news headlines, sports scores, and instant messages via a FM radio and a subscription fee.

LG Reported to be Working on its own smartwatch and a Google Glass-like Project

Apple, Google, and Samsung are all rumored to be building their own smartwatches, LG becomes the latest manufacturer to reportedly join the fray. According The Korea Times.

LG is currently developing both a smartwatch and another wearable computing device described as something similar to Google Glass. It wouldn't be the first time that LG developed such a product — back in 2009, the company showed off a "watch phone," which came with a full GSM radio built-in for voice calls. This rumored new product would be more along the lines of the Pebble and other speculated smartwatches, with the ability to sync with your smartphone and check messages or other notifications.

The watch is reported to run on Android, which fits considering the company's heavy focus on Google's OS — but there's also a chance it'll run the new Firefox OS that was shown off in detail at MWC last month. While it would certainly make sense for LG to be exploring wearable computing options, the timing of this rumor helps put LG in the conversation alongside consumer technology's giants — smartwatches from Samsung, Google, and Apple are probably the biggest rumor in technology right now.

Google reported working on its own smartwatch!

Reports claimed that Google's Android unit is working on a smart watch. With Samsung confirming that it is working on a smart watch and rumors about Apple's "iWatch" continuing to circulate, it appears that the three companies are set to battle in a new mobile device segment.

The report unsurprisingly suggests that Google views the smart watch as a more mainstream wearable accessory than the Google Glass project that has garnered significant attention in recent months.

While Glass is being created in its X Lab, home to experimental “moonshot” projects such as the self-driving car, Google’s smart watch is being developed by its Android unit, according to a person briefed on the project, to act as an extension to the smartphones using that operating system. The project is separate from Samsung’s efforts, the source said, although there is no indication of when it might launch.

Be Ready 4 The Next Galaxy

Samsung tweets 'Be Ready 4 The Next Galaxy' invitation for Times Square Galaxy S IV festivites March 14.

Samsung already sent out invitations for its big March 14 event in NYC, where it is widely expected to announce the 2013 Galaxy S IV flagship, and it seems the festivities will be spilling over to Times Square as well.

The Koreans haven't been shy with advertising dollars in the last few years, while building the Galaxy brand, outspending Apple more than ten-to-one last year, and that prime New York advertising real estate called Times Square won't come cheap again.

Samsung's Galaxy S4 to come with an S4 mini and a smart watch

The Galaxy S4, aka GT-I9500 or Altius, has been developed under the name Project J and could be announced in March. Well Project J now consists of a total of three devices, based on information about upcoming accessories.

Samsung's Project J mini, codenamed Serrano, hints towards a smaller smartphone which would be the Galaxy S4 mini. This isn't exactly an outrageous claim since Samsung has launched the Galaxy S3 mini to sit alongside the full size Galaxy S3.

SamMobile says the Galaxy S4 mini uses almost the same accessories as the Galaxy S4 but won't feature wireless charging. It is likely to be a cheaper and lower spec version of Samsung's new flagship smartphone.

The third device is called Project J Active, codenamed Fortius, and hasn't been full decided upon. It will come with accessories including an arm band, bike mount and punch suggesting it could be a smart watch. Samsung might call it the Galaxy Watch but alternatively it could be a smartphone similar to the Galaxy Xcover 2.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is tipped to feture an Exynos 5 Octa 8-core processor, 4.9in Full HD screen, wireless charging, a 13Mp camera and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.It has been suggested that Samsung will announce the handset outside of MWC (Mobile World Congress) on possibly 15 or 22 March. It will then be released and go on sale some time early in April.

Galaxy S4 reportedly set for March 15

Samsung Electronics is set to unveil the Galaxy S4 at its own event on March 15 and expected to go on sale in early April.

There's increasing hype and interest in the launch of the next Galaxy S smartphone, which Samsung has built up as a worthy rival to Apple's iPhone franchise. The Galaxy S III landed with all of the attention of an Apple launch, and the anticipation over the Galaxy S4 is expected to be even higher. The report has the invitations coming out after Mobile World Congress, which kicks off in the last week of February.

The Galaxy S4 will launch in Europe and Asia before the end of April, while the Americas, Australia, and Africa will get the phone around May or June.

A Complete Guide to Install Official Android 4.2 Jelly Bean On Galaxy Nexus GSM

Google has officially started pushing the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update to the Galaxy Nexus device. The update is currently being pushed to users of the US GSM/HSPA+ variant of the device but it can be installed manually to the international GSM/HSPA+ variants as well and as ever, we’ve got you covered with our detailed installation guides. So read on, and get Jelly Bean 4.2 up and running on your Galaxy Nexus in no time.

Requirements
  • GSM/HSPA+ Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Do NOT proceed if you have the CDMA variant; you WILL most likely brick your device if you do.
  • USB Cable
  • Android SDK installed on your computer for using fastboot.
  • Archive utility of your choice.
  • ClockworkMod recovery image.
  • Android 4.2 OTA Update Image.
  • Latest Android 4.1.2 Factory Image (Only if mentioned below in the ‘Preparing Your Device’ section)
Preparing Your Device
Determine whether your device is the takju, yakju or yakjuXX variant:

Launch Google Maps on your device and go to its Settings > About.
Note what it says under ‘Device’ after the term ‘samsung’. It should be takju, yakju or yakjuXX where XX is an alphanumeric combination.
Now follow these preparation instructions according to your device.

Takju On Stock ROM
Go to Settings > About phone. If it says ‘4.1.2’ under Android version, you are good to go. If it shows an earlier version, go to System updates (on the same screen), check for the latest OTA update and download and install it following the instructions you get on the phone.

You may now proceed to ‘Installing ClockworkMod recovery’ if you are on a fully stock system with stock recovery, or skip that step and go straight to ‘Installing the Update’ section if you have ClockworkMod recovery already installed.

Takju On Custom ROM & Yakju Or YakjuXX On Any ROM
If you are using a custom ROM on Takju or any stock/custom ROM on Yakju, you must first revert to the stock 4.1.2 takju firmware. Don’t worry if you have yakju, as takju firmware can be safely installed on it without any risk whatsoever.

Do note that this method will involve manually flashing the firmware images to your device and for this purpose, its bootloader must be unlocked. Unlocking the bootloader will involve a complete wipe of your device, so you should backup all your data before proceeding.

Attention yakjuXX owners: Note that you will essentially be switching your yakjuXX over to takju firmware. Since yakju firmware is compatible for manual flashing to yakjuXX devices and takju firmware is fully compatible when manually flashing to yakju devices, that should make takju firmware fully compatible with yakjuXX. However, perform this ENTIRELY at your own risk, as it also involves flashing the takju radio to yakjuXX. we will not be responsible for any damage that may be caused to your device in case anything goes wrong.

Steps in installing the latest Jelly bean 4.2 on your device
  • Unlock the bootloader of your device
(if you havent then follow this steps to unlock bootloader on you device
Download and install Android SDK
After that turn off your device and boot in bootloader mode by holding power button along with trackball.
Now go to command prompt / terminal interface on your computer and type following command:
fastboot oem unlock
Once this is done, your phone will show a screen that will prompt you regarding unlocking bootloader. Read through the instructions carefully and select “Yes – Unlock bootloader (and void your warranty) by pressing Volume Up button followed by pressing the power button.
There you go! You now have your bootloader on a stock Android device unlocked.)
  • Download the latest 4.1.2 tajku firmware here
extract its contents to a folder using your favorite archiving utility. (Depending on the application you use, extracting the contents of the downloaded tgz file may result in a tar file. Don’t fret, and simply extract the contents of the tar file.)
  • Connect your Galaxy Nexus to your computer via USB
If the required drivers aren’t already installed, they should start downloading and installing automatically. Wait till they are installed before proceeding.
  • Reboot your device into fastboot mode
if you dont know how to, follow this;
Power the device off.
Keep both the volume down and volume up buttons firmly pressed.
Press the power button without releasing the volume down and volume up buttons.
Wait till the device boots in bootloader mode (you will see a bug Start button on-screen with a lying down and opened-up Android logo), and then release the buttons. Again, if any drivers start installing on your PC, wait till they are completely installed.
  • For Takju or Yakju
Run the flash-all.bat file on Windows, or flash-all.sh on Linux/Mac.
  • For YakjuXX
Open a command prompt window, navigate to the location where you extracted the files, and enter these commands in this sequence:
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-maguro-primelc03.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash radio radio-maguro-i9250xxlf1.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot -w update image-takju-jzo54k

Your device will boot into the stock takju Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean firmware. Now is the time to configure your phone in the initial setup wizard. Once done with that, you should be ready to move to the next step.

  • Installing ClockworkMod Recovery
if ClockworkMod recovery has not been installed the follow this;
Download the ClockworkMod recovery image from here
Connect your phone to your computer via USB.
On your phone, go to Settings > Developer Options, enable them from the toggle button at the top, and then enable ‘Android debugging’ under the ‘Debugging’ section. If any drivers start to install on your PC, wait till they finish automatically installing.
Open a command prompt window on your computer and navigate to the location where you placed the ClockworkMod recovery image.
In the command prompt window, enter this command to reboot into bootloader mode:
adb reboot bootloader
Once the device is in bootloader mode, enter this command to flash the recovery:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.1.0-maguro.img
Now boot back into Android mode by hitting the power key once.

You should now have ClockworkMod recovery installed. All that is left now is to flash the latest 4.2 update, so let’s get on with it.

  • Installing The Update
Download the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OTA update file from here
Connect your device to your PC. It should automatically be available in MTP mode for file transfer.
Transfer the downloaded OTA update file to your device.
Open a command prompt window and enter this command to reboot your phone into recovery:
adb reboot recovery
Once in recovery, choose ‘install zip from sdcard’ followed by ‘choose zip from sdcard’, and then select the OTA update file that you transferred to the device.
Confirm the prompt you get for installing the update, and wait patiently till it is flashed.
Once the update is completely flashed, reboot your device by selecting ‘reboot device now’.

  • Congratulations
Your Galaxy Nexus should now be running the latest official Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
Enjoy!
