iPad mini pricing leaks

Obviously, the long-rumored iPad mini will be Apple’s response to the increasing demand of 7-inch affordable tablets, with Amazon’s Kindle Fire line and Google’s Nexus 7 tablet being the best sold devices in this category, at least for now.

But unlike Amazon and Google which aren't making any money from actual tablet sales but rather from digital content distribution, Apple is likely to turn a profit on its Apple mini:

Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu said that, if Apple prices the smaller tablet between $299 to $349, it could maintain the current margins.

“The biggest cost in a tablet is the display,” he said. “On a mini, the display will be a bit cheaper.

If the tablet is priced below $299, Apple could still maintain a decent margin if it offers 8GB of storage instead of the minimum 16 GB storage it has in the current iPad, Wu added.

And it seems that such analyst talk is now backed up by a leaked inventory screenshot from German retailer Media Markt that reveals the iPad mini pricing structure. Apple will apparently launch two 7.85-inch tablet versions, Wi-Fi-only and Cellular + Wi-Fi and offer four capacities for each one, from 8GB all the way up to 64GB. Add to that the fact that each version will be available either in black or in white and you end up with 16 flavors to choose from. Comparatively, the newest 9.7-inch iPad is also available in Wi-Fi and Cellular + Wi-Fi options; in the same two color options, but offers only three capacities, from 16 to 32GB – therefore 12 iPad 3 versions are available in stores, not including the iPad 2 that’s still selling alongside the current flagship product.

13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display confirmed for Apple event

Alongside the smaller iPad, Apple will debut a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, according to a consistently reliable source at a high-profile U.S. retailer.

This new 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina Display is said to pick up the thinner and lighter enclosure of the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display that was released in June.

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro will be sold in two configurations, with differing processors and storage, and will be available for purchase soon after introduction.

Like with the 15-inch MacBook Pro lines, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display will be sold (at a higher price) in addition to the current non-Retina display model. That computer was updated with faster processers and USB 3.0 in June.

The current 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display is codenamed D2, and its smaller sibling is in fact, as dubbed D1 internally.

Google’s Native iOS Maps App In Alpha Stages. (Leaked Screenshots)

iOS 6 users will be more than aware by now that Google’s powerful Maps app is no longer part of Apple’s plans, with the latest iteration of the company’s mobile operating system shipping with their own mapping solution in place of it. It doesn’t really matter what your personal opinions are on the subject and whether you love or hate the Apple’s very own Maps app, the fact remains that competition always breeds innovation and having an official Google Maps app on the App Store can only be a good thing for iOS users.

There’s been a lot of will they won’t they speculation in recent weeks about whether or not Google is actually working on bringing an official solution of their own to the App Store, and if the latest leaks and speculation are true then the answer is that they definitely are about to launch something. Designer and developer Ben Guilds has posted some blurry but recognizable images on his personal blog that he claims to show Google’s iOS Maps app and insists that it is currently in an alpha stage of development.

In addition to the pictures being posted of the app; Guilds is also going out on a limb and attaching some purported features of the app to the images. One of the great benefits of the new Apple Maps app in iOS 6 is that it is entirely vector-based which allows Apple to cache a larger area for offline viewing as well as using significantly less data to render mapping tiles. According to the reports; the Google Maps app will also be vector-based and will support a similar two-finger rotation facility that can also be found in the native iOS 6 Maps app.

It is also being reported that the alpha version of the app provides a lightning fast user-experience and comes with an interface that has been specifically crafted to work perfectly with the larger display on the iPhone 5 and the new fifth-gen iPod touch. This is obviously all unofficial and readers will more than likely draw their own conclusions from the attached images, but it is extremely exciting news for iOS users if it is indeed true. It does however leave a few questions unanswered about whether or not the app will boast 3D maps and imagery, and whether or not it will come with an iPad variant, or be universal? Time will tell.

Microsoft Office for iOS and Android coming in April of 2013

A report indicated that Microsoft was planning on releasing Office for iOS and Android in March of 2013. Microsoft replied to this claim and said it was not accurate. Now, a new report reveals that Office for iOS and Android will hit in April of 2013.

"Additionally, a good source of mine gave me better specifics about general availability: I was told that general availability of Office 2013 is expected in the last week of January or first week of February 2013. Furthermore, if you’ve seen rumors about Office 2013 for iOS and Android, they’re happening, but the products will only be made available via the subscription Office offerings, and hit in April. This will give a user rights to use Office on 5 PCs and/or Macs and 5 devices," Paul Thurrott stated in the report. This report comes just days after Microsoft responded to a claim that Office for iOS and Android would be released in March of 2013. If this new report is true, we can see Office for iOS and Android in April of 2013 with the ability to use Office on 5 different devices. More on this as it develops.
